Suddenly You by Lisa Kleypas

Who are you when you’re writing?

Who are you when you’re not writing?

Myself. Nothing really changes.

Which do you prefer more?

I like both.

What drives you to write more?

The many stories in my head.

How often do you experience writer’s block and what do you do to get out of it?

There is no such thing as writer’s block only writer’s fear.

Are you a perfectionist when it comes to your work?

Aren’t we all?

Do you like making outlines when you write, or do you prefer to start from scratch and work your way from there?

I prefer starting from scratch.

If you could do both at the same speed, which would you prefer: Writing on paper or typing your words? Why?

I don’t really write on paper anymore. It’s either my phone or my laptop.

What is the best writing advice that you could share with us?

Don’t give up.

Of all the things that you’ve ever written (poems, essays, short stories, novels, etc.), which one is the most special to you?

The one I’m currently writing.

What inspired the idea of your first book with Swoon Reads, No Love Allowed?

The image of a girl falling off a cliff.

What message would you like your readers to learn from that book?

That mental illness is not something to take lightly but it isn’t a taboo subject either.

What inspired the idea of your latest book with Swoon Reads, No Holding Back?

The ultimate European adventure.

What message would you like your readers to learn from that book?

That it’s a person meets person world. Love is for everyone.

What is the greatest challenge that you have encountered in the publishing world and how did you overcome it?

Rejection is a real experience. It will discourage you. But if you don’t give up you will get to where you want to be.

No Holding Back is a book that promotes diversity in YA mainly because of its M/M theme. What other things makes this book stand out?

The all-expense paid European adventure.

Aside from books presenting LGBT themes, what other themes would you consider as diverse?

Anything and everything. That is what diversity means.

What titles would you recommend to those seeking for diverse books?

Lots. If I Was Your Girl, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, Every Day

How would you define book discrimination?

Basically when you judge someone based on their reading preferences.

How do you feel about it?

I read what I want, so I don’t really pay much attention to what anyone else thinks.

What do you think is the cause of book discrimination?

Discrimination is discrimination. It’s all the same.

What would you do against it?

I wouldn’t let anyone dictate what I should or should not read.

Greatest takeaway from this interview: it’s writer’s fear, not writer’s block. I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you so much for participating in my blog event, Ms. Kate! 🙂
